From Lions to Lanyards: The British Met Police and the New Persecution of Christians

There was a time when Christians were thrown to the lions for sport. Now, in twenty-first-century Britain, they are thrown to the wolves of bureaucracy, their beliefs devoured not by beasts but by the polite tyranny of the progressive state. The Roman Empire killed Christians to preserve the supremacy of the state. The British Metropolitan Police harass them to preserve the supremacy of the ideology that replaced the state: the cult of diversity, inclusion, and leftist dogma. The Romans were at least honest. They feared the Christians’ loyalty to a higher moral authority. They saw in Christianity a rival power, one that would not bend the knee to Caesar. So they outlawed it, crushed it, and turned martyrdom into public spectacle. But the British state? It lies. It cloaks its persecution in rainbow flags and hate crime legislation. It preaches tolerance while stomping on street preachers. It weaponizes “public order” laws to silence those who dare quote scripture on abortion or marriage. Its lions wear bodycams and lanyards. What was once crucifixion is now cancellation. Consider Pastor John Sherwood, arrested in Uxbridge in 2021 for preaching that marriage is between a man and a woman. His crime? Offending someone’s feelings. The footage is chilling: a white-haired man dragged away by the state for quoting Genesis in public. Just standing still with her eyes closed. The thought police are real, and they wear Metropolitan Police badges. The Christian Legal Centre has an overflowing docket of cases that wouldn’t be out of place in Soviet archives. Source: Christian Concern – Legal Cases These aren’t bugs in the system. They’re features. The state no longer fears jihadists, gang members, or paedophiles as much as it fears a man with a Bible and a backbone. As Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn warned: “In our country, the lie has become not just a moral category but a pillar of the state.” In Britain, the same lie has metastasized. The lie that “inclusion” is neutral. That “tolerance” means freedom. That state-enforced speech codes somehow protect liberty. But if you want to know what a regime truly values, look at what it criminalizes. In our case: prayer, preaching, and truth. Where is the Church of England in all this? Nowhere. Spineless. Subservient. Waving the same flags as its persecutors and calling it “outreach.” The Romans made martyrs. The British state makes examples. Which is worse? It’s time to stop pretending. This is not a free country, not for Christians. Call to Action: If you believe in truth, speak it. If you believe in Christ, live it, publicly, fearlessly, and without apology. Write to your MP. Support legal defence funds like Christian Concern. Share every outrageous arrest and challenge every lie dressed as “law.” And to the cowards in clerical collars and police uniforms: We see you. History will judge you. God already has.
